The API Training, Java Programmer, Intro to Java Programming learning path provides a comprehensive and practical guide for those interested in learning to program in Java. Java is a popular and powerful language and is the standard in open source development. You will learn how applications, applets, and servlets are similar and different, how to build a basic user interface that handles simple end user input, how to read data from and write data to files and databases, and how to send and receive data over the network. Although comparatively simple in its language structure, there are a number of subtleties that can trip up less experienced programmers. The Intro to Java Programming path is intended for programmers with experience in languages other than Java, but who may or may not have any previous Java programming experience. This path focuses on procedural and structured coding skills first, and then offers meticulous, in-depth coverage of object-oriented concepts and how to apply them to Java software design and development. Java is object-oriented, it is based on C, and the terse nature of C may be unfamiliar to students with some previous experience programming in languages such as COBOL or Visual Basic who do not have experience with C or C++.

The latter part of the learning path moves from these basic skills into key parts of the Java SE Core API, including collections, logging, streams, and object serialization providing advanced training in developing software using the Java Platform, Standard Edition, or Java SE. It is intended to build on the students fundamental skills in structured and object-oriented Java programming, including use of the Collections API and exception handling. The path covers several general-purpose topics: using and building generic types, writing multi-threaded applications, the Reflection API and annotations, and network programming using sockets. The Intro to Java Programming Path prepares the student for more advanced Java topics such as: JDBC, secure coding, Swing GUI programming, and design patterns.

Students come to Java from a wide range of backgrounds; The Intro to Java Programming is designed to be as flexible as possible for students making their first dive into Java.
